Volunteer With 4th Second

Direct action starts with local community support.

At 4th Second, we believe that lasting systemic change isn’t created from the top down, it’s built from the ground up through direct service, shared leadership, and deep community care. Whether you are getting your hands dirty in our urban garden, mentoring young leaders, transporting youth to empowering programs, or supporting street medicine outreach, your time and skills directly bridge the gap between critical community needs and resources.

Volunteer Opportunities by Track

  • Location: 600 Cherry St, Vallejo, CA

  • Schedule / Open Hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (1 to 5 hours weekly, year-round).

  • What Volunteers Do:

    • Garden Maintenance & Cultivation: Beautify the space, propagate native plants, cultivate seasonal fruits and vegetables, and amend/establish healthy soil.

    • Composting & Sustainable Methods: Practice soil health and composting, cover crop reinforcement, and reduce water footprint.

    • Carpentry & Bioconstruction: Assist with basic carpentry, building projects, and eco-friendly structures.

    • Arts, Crafts & Wellness: Help with garden arts and crafts, or support activities integrating gardening with mental health and wellness.

    • Mentorship & Events: Serve as a community garden mentor or host/support seasonal outdoor community events and workshops.

  • Locations: Georgia Youth Center & Tuolumne Youth Center

  • What Volunteers Do:

    • Transportation Support: Provide safe transport for youth from school to programming locations and back home.

    • Field Trip Chaperones: Help transport and supervise youth during field trips and community outings.

    • Workshop & Event Facilitation: Lead or co-lead workshops, guest presentations, or community events.

    • Academic & Skill Support: Assist youth with homework, college prep, or specialized skill-building (e.g., arts, digital media, financial literacy).

What Volunteers Do:

  • Street Medicine Support: Healthcare professionals and community members can assist with street health outreach, hygiene kit distribution, and wellness checks.

  • Community & Corporate Groups: Group volunteer opportunities for local businesses and organizations to host donation drives, workshops, or service days.
